How to Make the Most of Your Space in a Small Apartment

Stylized Arlington Studio Apartment with Storage SpaceIf you live in a small Arlington apartment, it’s important to make the most of every square inch. Keeping your home neat and organized can be a major challenge when you don’t have much space to work with. This particularly true if you share your small apartment with others. Thankfully, you can use many helpful tricks to keep your personal belongings from overwhelming you and your home. No matter your decorating style, these organizational strategies can help you to keep everything in your home in its proper place.

Hidden Storage

When space is limited, the first thing you need to do is make your furniture do double duty. To add storage to a living room, start adding a storage ottoman or side table. These pieces can help you keep throws, media cases, and other items organized and out of sight with large interior compartments.

Use the Space Under Furniture

To free up space in your closets and bookshelves, think about storing off-season clothing or rarely used items under beds or other furniture. You can purchase storage containers that are designed to fit under a bed. But if your bed is too low to the ground, you need to put risers to lift it a few inches. This gives you a lot more space to store items that you don’t need access to every day.

Shrink & Save Bulky Items

To save space when storing your sweater collection, blankets, or spare pillows, start utilizing vacuum bags. These bags form a tight seal around your bulky items, shrinking them down to a much smaller dimension. They even seal out dust, making it a perfect option to store seasonal items. By keeping large and bulky items from that approach, you can easily store double the number of personal items in the same amount of space.

Hang It Up

Another option to reap the advantages of your small apartment is to use walls to their full potential. There are numerous small apartments without a hall closet, making it difficult to determine what to do with coats, hats, and umbrellas. Consider adding hooks or open shelves behind the door or on an adjacent wall so that you can gain extra places to keep your things organized. You can take this same principle for bigger items, including bicycles. Adding sturdy hooks or pegs to a wall can give you a convenient place to hang a bike or other bulky objects, freeing up floor space and keeping your belongings out from underfoot.

Utilize Nooks & Crannies

Sometimes, in order to see the full capacity of your small apartment space, you need to consider putting every nook and cranny to work. With some basic tools, you can build spaces on the insides of cabinet doors, the back of bathroom doors, crawl spaces, attic spaces, and other parts of the room into storage areas for your stuff. Besides that, nearly all closets and cabinets contain odd corners or hidden places that could be essential for storing items you don’t use daily.

Simply stacking boxes behind your hung clothing can also bring plenty of extra storage. Lastly, maximize your vertical storage space by including shelves in unused spots in your kitchen, entryway, bedroom, bathroom, and all that. When combined with decorative bins and baskets, your open shelving could turn into a storage-friendly accent piece for your apartment home.
